Vocaroo: streamline your language B assessments!

Vocaroo is a web based voice recording program that allows users to record audio right within their web browser.  It can access the built-in microphones on your laptops, so students with their own devices can quickly record audio and save it online.

I think this could be hugely useful for Language B classrooms with a few minor additions!  I actually stumbled upon this when trying to help one of our Language B teachers figure out how to better assess his students when he has 2 completely different levels in the classroom.  This makes oral assessment almost impossible in a class period.  Vocaroo may be able to reduce the pressure a bit for the teacher by allowing students to submit oral responses to questions.

This will require 4 steps for the teacher, and 2 for the student.
1) The teacher must first post the question, or provide the context for students to respond.  Maybe something like:

Please analyze the picture and respond about the relationships you see.

2) The teacher needs to go to the WIDGETS section of Vocaroo.com, and copy the embed code for the widget that allows you to embed Vocaroo into your own site AND save the recording (it's currently the 2nd option).  Then add the code to your site using an embed widget, or by pasting the code directly into your HTML code.

This will be where students record their response to the picture above.

3) Teachers will need to also go to Google Drive and create a FORM.  This is where the students will submit the link that Vocaroo produces.  When you go to Google Drive (formerly Docs), you have the option to CREATE NEW, and select FORM.  This will create a form that students will use to submit their answers.  After you have created a form similar to the one below look for the MORE ACTIONS button at the top right of the form, and select the embed option, and paste it into your site like the Vocaroo earlier.

Students will copy and paste their Vocaroo link into the form.
4) Teachers will finally go back to their Google Drive account and find the spreadsheet of the responses.  This will contain the links to the Vocaroo responses that you can listen to outside of class.  This will allow the whole class to be orally responding to the same question, and for you to listen and assess later.

Below is what the spreadsheet might look like.  Feel free to try out the Vocaroo widget and upload your own link to get a feel for the process!
